AGTAD TOUR II - RAJGHAT, SHANTI VANA & SHAKTI STHAL - 4 FEBRUARY 2006

At 10:00 am, we took 7 students of different classes of ASK - 5 boys and 2 girls- and a teacher to Rajghat. It is the samadhi (memorial) of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. There were beautiful lawns all around. We completed the parikrama of the monument.

Then, we proceeded to Shanti Vana –the samadhi of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. There were roses planted in the premises. We then walked to the Samadhi of Mrs. Indira Gandhi called Shakti Sthal which is close by. It is marked by a huge rock.

The tour took around two hours. The students were served with refreshments before they left the memorials for school. They were back in school by 1 pm.

With this tour over, I have the following suggestions.

(i) As the days are becoming hotter and considering that the tours can be carried out only on Saturdays, it would be ideal if the tour can commence in the morning. At that time, there is also no rush and traffic on the roads in Delhi. We should aim at completing the entire trip before the traffic and pollution sets in. With the present timings, 10 am to 1 pm, a lot of time of the students is wasted on mere commuting.

(ii) As a lot of effort goes into the tour, it will be worthwhile if the Principal’s kind arrangement of an additional vehicle-Qualis from the school is continued and a larger number of students are taken out on such excursions. An additional vehicle had been made available last time. Such an arrangement would result in the betterment of more children with the same effort.

(iii) A few students out of the group sent this time had already visited these memorials earlier. The purpose of AGTAD will be better served if children from ASK who have not visited the monument alone are selected for the tour.
