About the MUNGLO Award
Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram were the proud recipients of the Model United Nations Global Leadership Opportunities (MUNGLO) Award 2003-04, instituted by UNA-USA and sponsored by the Goldman's Sach's Foundation. The MUNGLO Award included an amount of $ 20, 000, publications and other resources to help the teachers and students learn the dynamics of holding and participating in a Model UN conference. On March 27th - 31st 2004, a staff training & teachers training programme was conducted by UNA USA Coordinators Ms. Glenda Tesalona and Ms. Melissa Yahre. To strengthen the DPSMUN Secretariat, 2 students and 2 faculty members attended the Model United Nations Conference in New York City from May 18 - 22 2004. One of the students, Ankita Agrawal was awarded the 'Best Delegate' for representing 'Slovakia' in the General Assembly.

Through the MUNGLO Award, DPS RK Puram organized a Model UN Conference scheduled for the 3-5 December 2004 at India Habitat Centre.

  • Number of Delhi Public Schools which participated in the conference: 23 (inclusive of teams from Nepal and Sharjah)
  • Number of other Public Schools which participated in the conference: 27 (inclusive of 10 member delegation from Pakistan)
  • Total Number of Schools which participated: 50
  • Total Number of Countries represented: 63
  • Total No. of Delegates: 240 , Teacher Advisors: 60 , Conference Secretariat: 71

The Inauguration Ceremony was graced by the presence of Mr. Salman Khurshid - President of the DPS Society, Mr. Rajiv Chandran - National Information Officer for India & Bhutan and Ms. Glenda Tesalona - National Coordinator for Global Classrooms, UNA USA. The students from the Tamana School presented a heart-warming medley of songs. The DPS choir rendered songs through which they conveyed a soul-stirring plea to make the world a better place. The choreography team of DPS R. K. Puram mesmerized the audience with their enchanting fusion of various dance forms. The ceremony concluded with the Secretary General, Ms. Vrinda Marwah declaring the conference open.

During the course of the three-day conference the student delegates wrote position papers, negotiated with others, addressed committees through speeches and caucusing, thus navigating the UN rules of procedure. Some of the topics discussed were landmine proliferation, situation between Israel and Palestine, HIV AIDS and the world drug problem. The International Press of the DPSMUN released 3 Newsletters - "The UN Clarion" highlighting the proceedings of the conference.

On the 5th of December - a cultural programme was organized to welcome Mr. Rajat Gupta, Co Chairman UNA USA and Mr. Narendra Kumar Chairman, DPS Society. The highlight of the programme was a "Fashion Show" which was put up by the students of the Tamana School. The conference ended with a closing ceremony and prize distribution. Ms. Shalini Dewan, Director, United Nations Information Centre was the Chief Guest and gave away the awards and certificates. Delegates were commended for their position papers and country profiles. The prestigious "Secretary General's Award" for the best delegations were awarded to USA, Japan, Azerbaijan represented by DPS, Noida, Lahore University of Management & Amity International School, Saket respectively.

As popular as Model UN has become in Delhi and Bombay, for the other Public schools in India this was a first time experience. DPSMUN hopes to bridge the gap in the Model UN community between experienced programmes and traditionally underserved public schools.
